03 The complete 14-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Nairobi
You arrive in Nairobi, where A&K provides airport arrival assistance and a private transfer to the hotel.
There is no major sightseeing programmed on the first day. This is intentional: many travelers arrive after a long international journey and need time to recover before the safari begins.

We generally recommend arriving at least one day earlier if your international routing involves several connections or a late arrival. A missed connection on the way to Nairobi could otherwise affect the overland departure for Amboseli.

Day 2 — Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
The journey leaves Nairobi by road for Amboseli National Park.
Amboseli is known for elephant herds, open plains, wetlands and, when the weather is clear, views of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania.
After arriving and beginning the first wildlife viewing, the group gathers for a welcome dinner.

Starting in Amboseli works well because its open landscapes make wildlife relatively easy to see, particularly for first-time safari travelers.
The overland journey is also a practical introduction before the itinerary begins using regional flights.
Day 3 — Full day in Amboseli
The day is dedicated to morning and afternoon game viewing.
The safari vehicles carry six travelers, giving each guest a window seat. Wildlife may include elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, lions and cheetahs.
The group returns to the lodge for lunch before continuing the afternoon game drive.

Two nights in Amboseli are sufficient for a broad itinerary, although photographers or travelers particularly interested in elephants may prefer a longer stay on a private safari.

Day 4 — Amboseli to Tarangire, Tanzania
The group crosses from Kenya into Tanzania and stops for lunch in Arusha.
From Arusha, a regional flight reduces the amount of time that would otherwise be spent driving to Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is known for its baobab-dotted landscape, river system and significant elephant population.

A&K’s operational structure is particularly valuable here. Recreating the same sequence independently would require careful coordination among drivers, border formalities and air services.
Day 5 — Tarangire game drives and culinary experience
The day includes morning and afternoon game drives in Tarangire.
Elephants are a principal attraction, but the park also supports zebra, impala, lions, leopards, birds and other wildlife around the Tarangire River and surrounding habitats.
The afternoon includes a chef-led demonstration featuring Tanzanian dishes such as ugali, makande and kachumbari.

Day 6 — Tarangire to Ngorongoro highlands
The journey continues toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Before reaching the lodge, the itinerary includes a local village and market visit intended to introduce everyday life in Tanzania beyond the safari camps.

Day 7 — Ngorongoro Crater
The group descends into Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of game viewing.
The crater’s enclosed ecosystem supports a dense concentration of wildlife, potentially including lions, elephants, hyenas, buffalo, gazelles and other species.
A picnic lunch is included inside the conservation area.

Day 8 — Fly to Serengeti National Park
The group flies into Serengeti National Park, avoiding a much longer road transfer.
The Serengeti is the largest continuous wildlife landscape on this itinerary and forms the Tanzanian side of the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.
You begin a three-night stay at a full-service safari lodge in the central Serengeti.

Day 9 — Full day in the Serengeti
The day includes morning and afternoon game drives across the Serengeti’s grasslands.
Possible sightings include lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalo, giraffes and antelope species, alongside seasonal concentrations of wildebeest and zebra.

Day 10 — Further Serengeti exploration
Game viewing continues for a third day in the Serengeti.
Guests may also choose an optional hot-air balloon excursion at additional cost, subject to availability and operating conditions.

Three nights are the minimum we would generally want for a serious Serengeti stay within a multi-region itinerary.
However, Four Seasons is a permanent lodge in the central Serengeti. It does not relocate as the migration moves north or south.
For some departure dates, a seasonal camp may provide more direct access to the herds. For others, Four Seasons may be the better overall choice because of its comfort and year-round wildlife.
This is one of the main decisions Wonderia reviews before recommending the itinerary.
Day 11 — Fly to the Maasai Mara
The group flies from the Serengeti region toward the Maasai Mara in Kenya.
After arriving at the lodge on the Mara River, the itinerary includes an afternoon game drive followed by a sundowner.
Wildlife around the reserve may include lions, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, buffalo and numerous plains species.

Day 12 — Full day in the Maasai Mara
The day includes morning and afternoon game drives through open grassland, woodland and riverine areas.
The Maasai Mara offers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. During parts of the migration season, large numbers of wildebeest and zebra may enter the reserve from the northern Serengeti.

The final full safari day combines wildlife activities with a community component.

We still review the precise connection time carefully. Bush flights can be affected by weather and operating changes, and an overly tight international connection should be avoided.

Hemingways Nairobi
Hemingways Nairobi is an all-suite hotel in Karen, a quieter area southwest of central Nairobi.
Its role is practical: it provides a comfortable first night after international travel and a dayroom before the flight home.
It is not included because it offers a safari experience. It is included because arrival and departure logistics matter.
Tawi Lodge
Tawi Lodge is set in a private conservancy near Amboseli National Park.
Its location creates access to the wider Amboseli ecosystem while providing a quieter lodge setting than accommodation in a busier central area.
The main appeal is the combination of elephants, open landscapes and potential Kilimanjaro views.
Swala Camp, an A&K Sanctuary
Swala is a tented camp in Tarangire National Park.
This is the most recognizably traditional safari-camp experience in the early part of the itinerary, with canvas accommodation and access to Tarangire’s baobabs, elephants and river-influenced wildlife.
Its two-night stay is enough to sample Tarangire but not long enough for a particularly slow experience.
Gibb’s Farm
Gibb’s Farm sits on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater in a historic farm and coffee-growing environment.
It offers a deliberate contrast to the drier safari landscapes.
For many travelers, this becomes one of the most memorable properties because it introduces gardens, farm life and a slower residential atmosphere rather than simply another lodge overlooking a game area.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti
Four Seasons is located in the central Serengeti and offers the most extensive resort facilities on the journey.
It suits travelers who value:

Its contemporary suites and riverside setting provide a polished final chapter to the journey.
Compared with Four Seasons, Olonana feels smaller and more closely connected to its immediate natural setting, making the progression between the two properties valuable rather than repetitive.
05 The itinerary’s strongest features
Six nights across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara
The journey allocates three nights to each of the two principal migration regions.
That is more credible than an itinerary attempting to “see the migration” during a single rushed stop.
Every guest receives a window seat
The published six-guest vehicle configuration matters.
It avoids the least desirable safari arrangement: a crowded vehicle where some guests sit in the middle and depend on others moving before they can photograph wildlife.
Regional flights save substantial time
The itinerary uses included flights on several long sectors.
This protects safari time and reduces the physical fatigue of trying to cover Kenya and Tanzania entirely by road.
The lodges are comfortable but varied
The itinerary does not simply repeat the same camp format.

It is a fixed group journey
The maximum journey size is 18 guests, even though game-drive vehicles carry six.
Meal times, transfer times and the broad daily program remain structured around the group.
It covers considerable ground
Six accommodation stages in 14 days create variety, but also require repeated packing and movement.
A slower private journey might use only three or four camps.
The lodges do not move with the migration
The main herds move according to rainfall and grazing conditions.
A permanent lodge may deliver excellent resident wildlife without being closest to the largest seasonal herd concentrations.
A river crossing cannot be promised
River crossings are unpredictable.
Wildebeest may gather and then turn away, cross at another location or move on a different day. A responsible safari plan should maximize opportunity rather than promise a specific event.
07 Which departure period is most suitable?
July to September
This is generally the most obvious window for travelers focused on northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara migration activity.
It is also peak season, with higher visitor numbers and substantial demand.
Late June and October
These can be transitional periods.
They may offer excellent wildlife, but the main herds’ precise location becomes more dependent on rainfall patterns.
December
December can provide rewarding green-season wildlife and may align with movement back toward the southern Serengeti ecosystem.
It should not be chosen by someone whose principal objective is a Maasai Mara river crossing.
